Understanding the Foundations 

With decades of classroom and educational leadership experience, I've seen first-hand the dedication of educators, parents and allied health professionals in response to the diverse learning needs and challenges of children in classrooms and homes, when underlying body-based factors may be affecting how they learn and respond to their environment.

I’ve also seen how challenging learning and coping in a busy classroom can be for some children—not because they lack motivation, effort or ability, but because underlying body-based factors, like primitive reflexes that are not fully integrated or a nervous system that is immature, may be effecting how they learn and respond to their environment.

This drives my passion for providing professional learning and practical skills that help guide theoretical and practical understandings about the developmental foundations that can shape learning, behaviour and children's functioning through a neurodevelopmental lens. I support educators and others, understanding of the body-based foundations for learning that, when not yet fully established, may see children struggle to focus, self-regulate, coordinate and participate confidently in daily life and learning environments.

I assist educators, support staff and parents to better understand developmental patterns that may be underlying factors contributing to learning challenges that when supported through neurodevelopmental, evidence-based, gentle sequential movement strategies in school based or home settings may make a difference for learning, behaviour and functioning.

Practical Neurodevelopmental Learning Approaches

Using accredited neurodevelopmental learning approaches, I aim to build conceptual understanding and practical insights into the neurological and physical foundations that shape how students learn, participate and thrive; how to look for signs of developmental immaturity and strategies that may support improvement.

I understand that behaviour, motivation, stamina or attention challenges may sometimes be a reflection of unmet developmental needs and through professional learning, coaching and practical support, explore with others the connection between their body and brain, helping them better understand neuromotor and sensory immaturity (retained primitive and postural reflexes), sensory processing and learning development, to reframe these challenges so they can respond with well researched, evidence informed strategies.

Connecting physical development, reflex integration, sensory-motor function and nervous system maturity with classroom learning, I offer a practical approach that helps school leaders, educators, support staff and parents look beyond learning as a purely cognitive or academic process, so that they can respond with greater confidence to foundational body - brain influences.

Supporting Better Learning Outcomes from the Foundations

Gaining a deeper understanding of the role of foundational primitive and postural reflexes, immature sensory motor systems and practical movement strategies can better equip educators to target support that may improve learning and functional outcomes.

Drawing on their conceptual understandings, practical observation tools and a daily sequential movement program school leaders, educators and support staff are better equipped to support children's underlying development. 

Embedding understanding that neurodevelopmental movement approaches take time, consistency, commitment and sustained support, based on the principles of neurodevelopment and neuroplasticity, recognising that meaningful change happens gradually.  This approach is not a 'quick fix' - it's a well researched,  evidence-based approach, focused on building capabilities that may support children's neuromotor and sensory development aimed at better function and learning outcomes over time.

Common Signs to Look For

  • Fidgeting, unusual sitting positions or difficulty sitting still
  • Reading, visual tracking or focus challenges
  • Poor coordination, balance, handwriting or fine motor skills
  • Sensory sensitivities or sensory processing difficulties
  • Emotional dysregulation, anxiety or difficulty coping
  • Challenges with copying, movement or body awareness

When we take a closer look, what may appear as behaviour, attention or motivation issues, may be body-brain related, reflecting underlying unmet developmental needs that can affect learning.
